Google Launches Google Photos At I/O 2015 Keynote

While rumors have been floating around for a while, the Google I/O 2015 has made Google Photos official. And it is bigger than what we expected.

Google Photos is centered around three big ideas:

1. A home for all your photos and videos, a private place
2. To help you organize and bring moments to life
3. To make it easy to share and save what matters

1. A home for all your photos and videos, a private place

Photos that you take appear right on top of the app, and is automatically backed up to Drive. Like other gallery apps, Photos sorts all visual media chronologically and can display them from the beginning. It also allows you to pinch to zoom on this chronological order, zooming out to see an overview of days, months and years. Swiping to the right brings up collections, including montage videos that you’ve saved.

 

2. Help you organize and bring moments to life

Google Photos also helps you to organize moments and bring them to life. Using machine learning, the app automagically organize pictures based on the people present and the places they were clicked at. You can select a person in a picture, and go all the way back to the first picture of this person, even when they were babies!
Depending on how you swing, this can be really magical or really creepy to experience. Of course, there is also Assistant, a retasked Auto-Awesome to create awesome content by itself. Users can also create content themselves, including albums, movies, stories, animations and collages.

There is also easy video editing available, with focus on simplicity. You can change themes, soundtracks and even reorder clips.

3. Make it easy to share and save what matters

For this focus, the new Google Photos features a new gesture for multi-picture selection. Select a photo and hold and drag across to select rows of photos, similar to how the “Shift” button works on our desktops.

Even though all Photos are saved on Drive, it simplifies sharing. Tapping “Get A Link” would give you a shareable link to all selected media, without worrying about the recipient having particular apps installed.

The biggest announcement in this focus would be that Photos allows high quality, unlimited storage for free, without quality degradation. High Quality is still restricted to 16MP for photos and 1080p for videos, but these limits still cover most, if not all, popular devices.
