Google has announced an update to the Webview implementations on the upcoming Android M Developer Preview. This comes in the form of Chrome Custom Tabs.
Previously, you had two choices, either link out to the default browser, or render as an embedded webview. But with Android M, you can take advantage of Chrome Custom Tabs.
As an example, Pinterest was demoed. When you tap a web link at the bottom on pinterest, there is a custom transition animation to Chrome Tabs. Pinterest adds a custom button toolbar to the browser bar, Pinterest can inject menus into Chrome’s overflow.
This allows you make use of Chrome features such as device sign ins, saved passwords, Google Translate and Autofill, amongst other things.
Chrome Custom Tabs is available now in the Chrome Dev Channel, with release in Q3.
